The Affairs of Anatol (1921)

Socialite Anatol Spencer, finding his relationship with his wife lackluster, goes in search of excitement. After bumping into old flame Emilie, he lets an apartment for her only to find that she cheats on him. He is subsequently robbed, conned, and booted from pillar to post. He decides to return to his wife and discovers her carousing with his best friend Max.

I had to rewatch this because I had absolutely no recollection of what happened. Wallace Reid acts like an idiot for two hours, and expects his wife to forgive him. Good cast, featuring small roles for Bebe Daniels, Polly Moran, Agnes Ayres, Monte Blue and others, and a beautiful score from Brian Bennison. Sadly, however, it's difficult to turn a blind eye to the inherent double standard, and if I were Gloria Swanson's character, Vivian, I would have lost patience with Anatol about 15 minutes in.

DeMille's film is a racy and daring look at unfaithfulness and that paranoid kind of tension that takes place in a relationship. It's also quite entertaining, quirky with its remarkable tongue in cheek humour and a good solid pace. The Affairs of Anatol, in short, is a good specimen of the kind of 'controversial' and 'immoral' films which were being made during the pre-production code era.

One of the few Wallace Reid films I've seen, and I have to say that it's just absolutely tragic what happened to him.
