Internal Affairs (1990)

Keen young Raymold Avila joins the Internal Affairs Department of the Los Angeles police. He and partner Amy Wallace are soon looking closely at the activities of cop Dennis Peck whose financial holdings start to suggest something shady. Indeed Peck is involved in any number of dubious or downright criminal activities. He is also devious, a womaniser, and a clever manipulator, and he starts to turn his attention on Avila.

These are mean streets, but they're sexy and mean. And the evil here is all the more compelling because it has its enticements. So does the film, and though you'd be kidding yourself to accept it as anything other than flirtatious posturing, the allure of the thing is nearly irresistible.

Hadn't seen this film in years and I have to say that it stands up pretty well. This is probably the most accessible film by Mike Figgis but it has a darkness to it that is really noticeable and effective. The story is pretty straightforward but the characters and the cast are what makes this one standout a little. Garcia does a pretty good job, and the obsessiveness of his character as the story progresses is nicely played. Laurie Metcalfe is also really likeable as his partner. Even Billy Baldwin is good.... That brings us to Gere as Dennis Peck... Cold, calculating and intimidating the guy is excellent at portraying a really nasty piece of work mostly through mannerisms and body language. The fact that Gere will always be known for Pretty Women and An officer and a gentleman really bugs me as this is his best work on screen without doubt. Nicely shot and well played, this is a pretty decent thriller....

This is a wonderful movie, besides the fact that Andy Garcia was still a horrible actor back then. Every move that Gere made was a thrill and a destructive act....
