Tampopo (1985)

In this humorous paean to the joys of food, a pair of truck drivers happen onto a decrepit roadside shop selling ramen noodles. The widowed owner, Tampopo, begs them to help her turn her establishment into a paragon of the "art of noodle-soup making". Interspersed are satirical vignettes about the importance of food to different aspects of human life.

The best appetite-inducing film ever; two truck drivers embrak on a quest to make a single mother the perfect ramen chef. Along the way there are Japanese gangsters, homeless chefs and "inventine" sex scenes. If you ever see a copy (difficult in the UK), snap it up at once; you will not regret it.

The world's first (only?) noodle western, with overtones of Shane in amongst all the knowing cowboy cliches. It's a Warm, affectionate, funny and evocative look at a culture and a way of thinking; and not just about food. Truck driver Goro and happens upon the Lai Lai noodle bar and, after a fight and some bad noodles, vows to help the widowed Tampopo make the last word in noodle soup, with the help of some friends. In the meantime we see snippets of food and the role it plays in daily life, from the status obsessed salrymen at lunch to a family's last meal together. These little vignettes are at turns funny, touching, sexy, surprising; sometimes all of them. A hymn to the sensual pleasures of gastronomy.
