Sylvio is perhaps the most absurd buddy comedy that's ever been made.

Sylvio has stray moments of beauty that border on the sublime. There's a yearning to the hairy guy's amazingly uneventful puppet shows, a dream of sophistication that transcends his animal brutishness.

Sylvio's banal depictions of everyday loneliness through the diurnal tedium of an anthropomorphic animal brings to mind BoJack Horseman, but without the caustic navel-gazing and self-destruction or the mordant pop-culture musings.

The directors, Kentucker Audley (who co-stars as a talk-show host) and Albert Birney, embrace both sides of Sylvio’s temperament, realizing his frenzied outbursts (including a vehicular-chase scene) as imaginatively and as delicately as his self-doubt.

A film that shows just how safe Hollywood plays it. These are the kinds of ideas that need to come to the forefront of cinema. But instead they sadly lurk in the corners of your online streaming search, or in the arthouse theaters it takes a little longer to get to if you don't live in a major city. Sylvio may not be a perfect film, but it's perfect absurdism, and tightly interwoven into a crystal clear coherent social commentary. And most importantly, Sylvio doesn't crack. It may be absurd to the viewer, but in Sylvio's world, this is just life. And it may be very close to yours.// My Metascore for Sylvio as a whole may be 8; but surely a 10 for ambitious brave and intelligent film making.
