The Firemen's Ball (1967)

The firemen of a provincial Czechoslovakian town throw a ball in honor of the old chief's retirement. There will be music and dancing, a beauty pageant and a raffle. The whole town will be in attendance. However, the proceedings are dogged by difficulty at every step. Workplace injuries, stolen prizes, a shortage of pretty girls... and fire.

Banned from Czechoslovakia for being understood as a satire that openly mocked the heroes of the Communist regime (the people), Milos Forman's first film in color is this hilarious story made by a talented filmmaker who did know his way with an unpretentious dark comedy.

Despite such accusations, Director Milos Forman rebuffed the claim that his bouncy, packed comedy-of-manners about plans gone awry doubled as a political allegory. I think it does, and brilliantly so.

A bit humorous, although I'm not into the whole "everything that can go wrong must" thing. Yet it was banned in Czechoslovakia, so more power to it.
