The feature debut of Jane Campion is to be admired and shows off her ability to take two completely different tones and mash them together. With that being said the clash in tones was too drastic for me personally. Especially the quirky off the wall comedy running into the disturbing mental illness stuff. But the performances by Colston and Lemon are very good. And it has more than a few quality moments.

WTF?! How is this film a Criterion Collection pick? Sure it's artsy and uses lots of obvious symbolism and obnoxious montages of random shit... But I spent the whole film wondering whether the sister was supposed to have Down's syndrome or was just being a total bitch - that was one of the worst portrayal of mental illness I've ever seen.
