Starfish (2016)

Based on the real story of Tom and Nicola Ray from Rutland. Their perfect life is totally ruined in a single moment after Tom had developed sepsis. While her husband was in coma, Nicola gave birth to their second child on the other side of the same hospital. Within a matter of days, sepsis would rob Tom of both his arms and legs, and left his face severely disfigured. As an ordinary man, Tom never put himself at risk — he just woke up two months later in a nightmare, a face-off quadruple amputee... This incredible story of survival shows what can be overcome when love is unconditional.

Clark's film treats bracing subject matter with honesty and often startling intimacy but never loses sight of the courage shown by this particular family and the many others in the country affected by a truly horrifying condition.

Writer-director Bill Clark doesn't flinch from depicting the physical effects of Tom's illness, and neither does he pull any punches when it comes to showing us its gruelling emotional costs.

Very emotionally involving and well acted. At times painful to watch. Honestly deals with the loss of dignity taken away by illness. Set near magnificent Rutland Water which is NOT on the coast and therefore the Starfish of the title has poignantly captured how out of place the sufferer feels after catching this dreadful condition. Must see. Richard Knight Langham

The "starfish" reference is milked heavily and becomes sickeningly obvious.

Peter Bradshaw 26 Oct 2016

Froggatt's performance finds some strong notes. And a more sophisticated and complex film might well have failed to approach the painful realness of this story.
