It's a B level boxing movie. It just so happens to have been directed by Robert Wise and stars a Paul Newman who is out to prove he's a contender in Hollywood. The result is a movie that never really surprises you, but you love it anyways. The first half is kick in the guts authentic and plays more like a gangster film. Second half is one of the great boxing films.

Newman was great but I will always wonder what Dean would have done with the character. As it was originally written for him.

dunno what took me so long to see this. now i know where sly stallone got his rocky character. this part was meant for james dean before he was killed, giving newman the break that made him a star. with sal mineo and steve mcqueen as his street gang buddies. very entertaining if somewhat predictable story. well what can u do, it's all true :P the only lame part was perry como's theme song

The film more or less a Shoe In for James Dean straight after Giant but as we all know his life was tragically cut short. Even his stunning partner Pier was in this film also. Thankfully they didn't replace Dean with any hack they got a little unknown talented called Paul Newman at the time. The story of a trouble maker, somewhat drifter turning Pro Boxer to change his self restricting lifestyle. Although a little too handsome for a street thug Newman was he delivered with an intense & emotionally charged performance. This is a good a film & although a little patchy in parts it's a incredible debut for Paul Newman.

Not my cup of tea so to say, but it looks like Rocky especially and to a certain degree Raging Bull took a lot of notes from this movie. Newman is a bit over the top for my taste as a dumb brute who knows how to fight, but it's enjoyable enough, and I'm a mild fan of the boxing genre if done right.
