Shopgirl (2005)

Mirabelle is a disenchanted salesgirl and aspiring artist who sells gloves and accessories at a department store. She has two men in her life: wealthy divorcée Ray Porter and struggling musician Jeremy. Mirabelle falls in love with the glamorous Ray, and her life takes a magical turn, but eventually she realizes that she must empower herself and make a choice between them.

As Ray Porter watches Mirabelle walk away he feels a loss. How is it possible, he thinks, to miss a woman whom he kept at a distance so that when she was gone he would not miss her. Only then does he realize what he has done to Mirabelle, how wanting a square inch of her and not all of her has damaged them both, and how he cannot justify his actions except that... well... it was life.

The answer to Dennis Pennis's question to Steve Martin- "Steve, why aren't you funny any more?' Well, it's because he's making acerbic satires like Bowfinger and incredibly affecting love stories like this. Clare Danes is plain, Steve Martin is sleazy, and Jason Schwartzman is a stoner, but all become likeable characters, drawn out by Martin's affecting voiceover narration. For a simple story the journey of the film is suprisingly unpredictable. An absolute gem of a film.

Very sweet very beautiful a little romantic story. Clair Danes comes across as the sweetest dreamy girl in the big town looking for luck and love. She got natural beauty that comes out you like a breath of fresh air. No heavy make up, sexy cloths or stunts to make her shine. From behind the glove desk at Sacks she waits for her contacts, dreams of a chance encounter that will opens the door for her to explore her talent and whatâ??s awaits her beyond that. I did not know that Vermont is such a small village kind of a state. But this story gives it that dimension of innocence and purity.

I actually thought this was your typical chick flick movie with a corny ending. It's not. This movie is quite amazing. It's depressing but encouraging.
