Ship of Fools (1965)

Passengers on a ship traveling from Mexico to Europe in the 1930s represent society at large in that era. The crew is German, including the ship's Dr. Schumann, who falls in love with one of the passengers, La Condesa. A young American woman, Jenny, is traveling with the man she loves, David. Jenny is fascinated and puzzled by just who some of the other passengers are.

It makes for OK drama all the same, but it's all on the heavy-handed side. Well, subtlety was never Kramer's strong suit.

Another true classic everyone should see: Lee Marvin shows his true acting chops and this is the last film for Vivian Leigh (Gone With The Wind, A Streetcar Named Desire).

Numerous interlocking tales set on a 1933 sea voyage from Mexico to Germany. Several personal/love stories, but the focus is on the growing German anti-Semitism. A good piece of literature.
