Reminds us what a vulnerable undertaking acting can be, and what an intimate, manipulative, caring and torturous act directing is.

Probably Catherine Breillat's weakest film - it is essentially a behind the bedroom scenes of her most famous work, "Romance". There is some funny stuff here, and some interesting deconstructions of cinemas scopophilic gaze.

My favorite Breillat. Despite the lack of intimidating seriousness that characterizes her other films, Sex is Comedy quite successfully communicates her quintessential sense and sensibilities. The signature mood of doom and menace is replaced by a natural flow of tenderness. For a Breillat film, such a quality ought to be cherished - and it is by no means a compromise. Actually, the intimacy and sensuality in several scenes can be overwhelming. Rarely do we feel a vibe so titillating from a woman who merely sits and talks. Finally, there is an abundance of visual interest. As in Fat Girl and Anatomy of Hell - everything glows (even though the DP is different); every shot and its movements are staggeringly beautiful. Cinema is made for films like this.

Breillat's film is strictly for directors, actors, serious filmmakers, or die hard film fanatics in my opinion. If you've ever made a film or worked on one this movie is absolutely remarkable and hilarious. It follows a proto-reality of the making of 'Fat Girl', specifically chronicling the arduous task of getting young actors to help Breillat's alter ego make her film. As directors we have to play mother, father, lover, brother; we're master manipulators. The beauty of it is there is no loss of integrity since actors demand that manipulation from us: it's the fuel for their fire. 'Sex is Comedy' is brilliantly astute about the psychology of the director.

Sex is Comedy is consistently funny, equal parts lolsex and lolmovies. Jeanne just wants the actors to do their job: is that such a difficult thing to ask? I understand this is rather lighter than Breillat's more usual fare ... my interest was mostly piqued by Gregoire Colin. But I'd like to see how she explores the film's themes in her other works.
