Scarlet Street (1945)

Cashier and part-time starving artist Christopher Cross is absolutely smitten with the beautiful Kitty March. Kitty plays along, but she's really only interested in Johnny, a two-bit crook. When Kitty and Johnny find out that art dealers are interested in Chris's work, they con him into letting Kitty take credit for the paintings. Cross allows it because he is in love with Kitty, but his love will only let her get away with so much.

This intriguing, dark and bitingly clever film draws most of its power from style and direction. The story works both as a tragic human drama and as a nail-biting suspense. There is definitely a certain depth to this film that is a little rare in the genre.

Edward G. Robinson is so good in this movie. And I love Fritz Lang so much.

A tragic film about love and deception, with a few forks in the road, this film follows the path of a typical love story - unseemly love between two people not meant to be - except the love is built on lies, on both ends of the relationship, and there's a lot of other innuendo. A good Lang film, not his best work though.
