Scandal (1989)

An English bon-vivant osteopath is enchanted with a young exotic dancer and invites her to live with him. He serves as friend and mentor, and through his contacts and parties she and her friend meet and date members of the Conservative Party. Eventually a scandal occurs when her affair with the Minister of War goes public, threatening their lifestyles and their freedom.

A quality cast, polished writing and the atmospheric evocation of Soho and Whitehall sleaze make for a powerful depiction of Ward's fall from grace.

Intended as a four-hour mini-series, Scandal can feel long in places. A good re-creation of the 1960s in production design, but the shorter time it has means the real story is sacriﬁced somewhat. Tries to revisit the Profumo Affair with reasonable fairness, showing how media, politics and scapegoating can affect individuals. Sex scenes regarded as risqué for the time.

GREAT MOVIE, filmed perfectly by Michael Caton-Jones. Excellent job of capturing the early 60s in London. A couple of underage party girls brought down the entire ruling British regime - too many old men running around and sleeping with whoever they could. These girls weren't even 21 when all this happened! Joanne Whalley is the one in love with her liaison, John Hurt. Bridget Fonda is her more flippant friend. Ian McKellen plays a great John Profumo.
