With so many war films coming out over the last few years, especially based in either Iraq or Afghanistan, it's hard to standout from the crowd. Sand Castle is one of those films that does nothing that hasn't been done dozens of time before and what it does do, it doesn't do very well. The plot follows Private Ocre (Nicholas Hoult) and his troop as they try to rebuild a water pump in Iraq. Not all of the locals are welcoming to the American troops so trouble punctuates their efforts up until the less than dramatic finale. The paint by numbers story line might not have been an issue if the characters were interesting but as with everything else in this film, they are so generic and flat that there is no emotional impact when something happens to them. Sand Castle isn't a bad film as such, it's just rather dull and forgettable.

It's a film that presents an emotional look into the Iraq War and shows how it effects both soldiers and the civilians caught in the middle of it all. There were some scenes that were unrealistic, but overall the film is pretty good.

Nicholas Hoult's character is weak, as is the script. The film is skewed to heavily in championing the Americans and could do a better job with a more balanced perspective. The horrors of war just don't hit home here. The action sequences are laughable in their effects and direction. If only the heathen Iraqis would understand that they are just trying to fix a well to make all of their lives better again! Sub-standard war-flick.

Strip away everything tedious or generic, everything that merely advances the plot, and this would just be a movie about men's bodies.

Gut-rot emotions are plentiful and powerful, but "Sand Castle" is best with the details of the day, grasping the nightmare of control that is Iraq, which inspires true fear in those tasked with implementing change.
