Sakuran is a wonderful pop ballad about ancient japan done in modern mtv-like visuals. The japanese "La Chapelle" Mika Ninagawa created this aesthetic fairytale and breaks traditional rules in japanese film culture. While the story could have more twists'n turns the cast fits nicely into the modern visual style and the 111 minutes pass away fast. Kudos for the soundtrack.

There are two things that I adore about this movie. First, it is a true visual feast (spectacle of vivid colours, ornaments, fabulous production designs and costumes). Second, the soundtrack by the great Shiina Ringo (mixing jazz, rock, pop and even cabaret). This poppy tale reminds a bit of Moulin Rouge or Marie Antoinette. I found the plot and directing a bit dissapointing, but I guess, a manga adaptation is not an easy thing to do. Some scenes are truely splendid: like the death of Takao Oiran or the official walk of Kiyoha (when becoming an Oiran). I'm sorry, that Kanno Miho only played a small part :(

Plot wise, there isn't anything new. Everything is laid out pretty much the way you expect it to but the characters were likeable and reasonably well acted. Anna Tsuchiya is an attractive and enigmatic protagonist; you want to root for her. But I guess you can't really complain about the plot lines since this is an adaptation of the manga of Anno Moyoco and they didn't veer much from the original story. Yes, I know oirans are suppose to be the epitome of class but in the original story, she is a reluctant and rebellious girl, so hey. Visually, it is one of the most stunning and beautiful movies I have ever seen, but that is expected of Ninagawa Mika, a very talented visual artiste. And with the interesting and flattering soundtrack as the icing on the cake, I think it is an enviable debut indeed. What Marie Antoinette tried but failed, Sakuran delivered.
