Among the virtues of Bergman Island is how uncluttered it is generally, as well as its consistent quietude and Hansen-Løve’s keenness of observation.

Bergman Island is a heart-stoppingly poignant stunner all the same — one beating inside a body of work that has always been seasick with the bittersweet vertigo that comes from looking at the past through the smudged lens of memory and imagination.

What in the world are critics smoking?! This film is dreadful. It’s like a soft core porn director got ahold of a student film script adaptation of a lost Swedish protégé of Bergman’s and cast his friends in it.

'Bergman Island' is a feast for every Ingmar Bergman fan. Full of references and iconic Bergman sites, the film also has an interesting love story and a meta-narrative worth exploring. All in all, this may be what every cinephile looks for in a movie. I liked it, but I felt Tim Roth's character was left hanging towards the end. Either way, I loved the acting in it and its funny moments, and the way it keeps you thinking afterward about what was fiction and what was reality.

While the film first regales us in sightseeing tours of the scenic Faro Island, the film ends in an unexpected wallop of heartbreak as Chris begins to describe the film-within-a-film she’s writing in her notebook to her unattentive partner.
