i admire the challenge Aleksandr Sokurov bought into the film. Also, it's very dreamy and very beautiful!

A fantastic, very interesting film!!It was the first feature film ever to be shot in a single take, filmed using a single 90-minute Steadicam tracking shot.

this is one of the most amazing films ever. i know, american audiences are like "what the hell?" first time i saw it was in study of modern cinema year 3 of college, and while in Prague, i watched it again, showing it to a girl from Belarus (russian is her native language) and she liked it, though she made similar complaints about it being somewhat like a school lesson. it was shot on DV, one take. no cuts, no editing. it's 90 minutes long and the camera is a character. you are looking through that character's eyes. it's beautiful.

Such a fascinating film, each shot being well crafted like the many paintings shown in the film, a fascinating journey into Russian history and a trip into an ethereal and mezmerizing state where beauty dwells among darkness, where instability reigns from time to time where influences and the cutting of tradition is detrimental and also expected, this film takes what we know of the Russian world and puts it into perspective, showing us how everything is repeated and coming about. The slow pacing and the dialogue suffice in its aim for us to grasp its motifs and to bring it out, fleshing it into what is basically cinema's most beautiful film.

An extraordinary (and as Ebert put it, "astonishing") dream about Russian history and the aesthetic experience. The first and only forseeable film to which I'll award a full five stars. I cannot describe how this film made me feel. These are but a handful of the superlatives that could be properly applied to Russian Ark (the first entirely unedited feature film, consisting of a single uncut shot), and I could add more. But this would be futile; no number of superlatives could begin to capture how I feel about this film. After all, if you believe the film, the aesthetic experience is irreducible to mere syntax and semantics. Highest recommendation.
