Time Bandits (1981)

Young history buff Kevin can scarcely believe it when six dwarfs emerge from his closet one night. Former employees of the Supreme Being, they've purloined a map charting all of the holes in the fabric of time and are using it to steal treasures from different historical eras. Taking Kevin with them, they variously drop in on Napoleon, Robin Hood and King Agamemnon before the Supreme Being catches up with them.

loved this film as a child , used to watch it over and over again LOL

There is something about this movie. It has a very subtle dark sense of humor, and vague mockery of human suffering, but not in a sadistic way, the the traditional Monty Python way. It captures perfectly a young boys fixation on violence & masculinity, and follows his journey as a he grows up. The visual style is amazing too, for the effects used. And I never get tired of watching it.

Terry Gilliam takes the audience on a magical and comical ride of a lifetime in this tour-de-force fantasy adventure. It's exciting, visually rich, full of endearing characters and cameos galore, and just a darn good time. Not since 'The Wizard of Oz' has a family fantasy adventure truly been this enchanting.
