Rosewater (2014)

In 2009, Iranian Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari was covering Iran's volatile elections for Newsweek. One of the few reporters living in the country with access to US media, he made an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, in a taped interview with comedian Jason Jones. The interview was intended as satire, but if the Tehran authorities got the joke they didn't like it - and it would quickly came back to haunt Bahari when he was rousted from his family home and thrown into prison.

Well acted, but lacked the emotional punch of the source material. Also Gael García Bernal doesn't seem like the right actor to play a Persian.

"Rosewater" is well acted and constructed, but it lacks the emotional punch one would expect from the source material.

This was a tense drama (based on a true story) about a Tehran-born Canadian journalist who is jailed and kept in solitary confinement, tortured and interrogated after he filmed the demonstrations after Ahmadinejad's so-called victory in 2009.

This brought me right back to that beautiful and horrible summer that I fell in love with the Iranian people. A beautiful testament to the strength of the human spirit.
