In 2009, Iranian Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari was covering Iran's volatile elections for Newsweek. One of the few reporters living in the country with access to US media, he made an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, in a taped interview with comedian Jason Jones. The interview was intended as satire, but if the Tehran authorities got the joke they didn't like it - and it would quickly came back to haunt Bahari when he was rousted from his family home and thrown into prison.

Simply brilliant. This film had no business being in any way humorous--to laugh while watching a film of this nature seems almost repugnant. But Stewart and all the actors make it work, thanks in large part to Bahari's own on-set consultation. The subject matter is horrifying, but the film is eminently watchable. It shows humanity at its best, its worst, and even in its mediocrity and does so with tact and honesty.

The 2009 imprisonment of Maziar Bahari is recounted in this intensely intimate film. It takes place around and following the election "victory" of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran. It is an indictment of political imprisonment, paranoia, the lack cross-cultural sophistication in his captors, and the villainy of a lack of sense of humor. It is somewhat grave, and definitely a film for grown ups (no fun explosions). I have some nits to pick about the pacing. And admit that if it had not been for the name of the writer/director, this one might have been a pass for me. The best part may be the understanding we get of the restrictions that the captors were working within, chiefly in the form of the interrogator named Rosewater. We empathize a bit.

ItÂ´s always good to watch movies about places that people can only imagine and that have been totally bastardized by the media. One would think Iran is a cesspool full of people trying to destroy America and praying 24/7. Turns out, Iran is a dictatorship with many people that not only disapprove of the ruling powers but defy them, many times paying a terrible price. Rosewater is a story about those unheard voices. While the plot is about a journalist that gets incarcerated for the crime of bearing witness, the story is deeper than that. This is a story about people trying to live better lives and sometimes having to suffer terribly to accomplish their goals. It's also a story about the fears and paranoias of those that seize power, instead of earning it. I must admit that Gael Garcia Bernal is an admirable actor. He legitimately chooses good projects (or at least interesting ones) when he could be drowning in Hollywood crap. Great little indie film. Good job Jon Stewart.
