It's like "An American Tragedy" but, you know, British.

Simone Signoret in her Academy Award winning performance in this excellent British film about morality.. 4 stars

Not great again Iâ??m afraid in my trundle through the BFI British films top 100. The revelations of â??The Lady Vanishesâ?? and â??â?¦Cornel Blimpâ?? seem along time ago. This is a late 50â??s relationship driven drama. Supposedly the first time sex and adult relationships were treated seriously in British film. This is true (no fade to black, comedy music and seaside postcard references here) but just because something is the first, doesnâ??t mean it is the best. Films like Closer, Close My Eyes and 9 Songs do it better and are not on the list

A man who doesn't define himself is trapped, attached by the forceful and heavy chains of what society decides is best for him. If he conceals or denies his true self, the rest of the world will be oblivious, knowing he is nothing more than just another puppet among the million they own. Incredibly brave and provoking character study.

Groundbreaking in it's time. This is the film that kick-started the 'sixties 'kitichen sink' revolution. While it's the first it's far from being the best, though it's a powerful, well acted story of a man who gains material success at the cost of his soul. Simone Sigoret won an Oscar for this, a rare examaple of the Acadamy getting something right for a change. Shame Harvey wasn't equally rewarded.
