Rodan (1956)

Mining engineer Shigeru investigates the disappearance and death of his fellow coworkers when prehistoric nymphs are discovered emerging from the mines. After an attack on the local village, Shigeru heads deeper into the mines only to make a more horrifying discovery in the form a prehistoric flying creature. Soon a second monster appears as the two converge in Fukuoka.

Coming 2 years after the first Godzilla movie, this is a total letdown in the kaiju genre. There's too much padding going in the storyline which is full of irrelevant scenes and it's fairly boring until the final third when Rodan start smashing up a city by using the power of it's wings. That was really good with some impressive model work and special effects. The ending is a bit crap with not one but two Rodan monsters committing suicide in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption created by the army. Think I'll stick to the Godzilla movies, much better than this one.

I'm really torn on this one about whether to give it 2 or 3 stars. I enjoyed the real-world aspects of the film, like GOJIRA, where the creature interacted with a more true-to-life cast of miners who unearthed the creature rather than the sort of fantastical stock characters who populated later kaiju efforts, but it cycles over so much of the same ground as GOJIRA that its redundancy becomes dull.

The flying sometimes enemy/sometimes friend to Godzilla, Rodan, well, two Rodans, gets their own solo film which is surprisingly dark and somewhat harrowing for a monstrous character that is usually subjected to childish foolery. Thanks to some particularly nasty giant bugs crawling through the Japanese mines, miners start getting tore the fuck up and the Rodans awake to stip up shit all over China. A good watch, but its no Godzilla!!
