Originally released in Japan as "The Return of Godzilla" in 1984, this is the heavily re-edited, re-titled "Godzilla 1985". Adding in new footage of Raymond Burr, this 16th Godzilla film ignores all previous sequels and serves as a direct follow-up to the 1956 "Godzilla King of the Monsters", which also featured scenes with Burr edited into 1954's "Godzilla". This film restores the darker tone of the original, as we witness the nuclear destruction of giant lizard terrorizing Japan.

godzilla walking around smashing stuff what could be wrong with that?

The first movie in the Heisei era harks back to the original Gojira movie back in the 50's. Gone are the silly fights with other kaiju in the Showa era to a more serious movie. Godzilla is back to his bad ass self after awakening from his slumber to head back to his favourite stomping ground of Tokyo. The Japanese counterattack with their newest secret weapon - Super X! I thought this was a great start to the new era with plenty of superb destruction sequences as Godzilla rampages in central Tokyo. The story is sombre and dark. A brilliant reboot to the franchise.

"Run for your lives! Let's do lunch sometime!" A cautionary tale of what can happen to nature when tampered with by humans. Godzilla is a force of nature and is thus an innocent. Men are the only true monsters. But I like seeing Godzilla stomp on Tokyo, and this is my favorite suit in the series. Simple as that.
