Decent crime drama. A couple rob mob clubs while John Gotti is on trial. Pitt is quite good as the dimwitted robber

Two small-time crooks in New York 1991 discover that Mafia social clubs are full of money and no guns, so they start robbing them (based on a true story). Unfortunately, the guy (Michael Pitt) is hot headed, dumb and never likable. On the other hand, Nina Arianda has created a delightful character as the girlfriend. She got lots of comic moxie and is the only worthwhile thing about the movie (except Griffin Dunne's supporting role). The script attempts to have emotional depth, but the writing and direction are flat. To make matters worse, it's predictable at every turn and the music is terrible. What starts out with a bouncy pace soon loses momentum and becomes a tedious yawn.

Rob the Mob's saving grace is also its heart as it offsets what would've been a black and white serious movie involving the mob with the ludicrous and often clueless leads played by Michael Pitt and Nina Arianda, as both, along with Andy Garcia and Ray Romano, inject just enough personality to keep the movie from slipping into being another run of the mill mob flick clone.

The true story is incredibly interesting and the characters are well painted with interesting backstories. Moreover, the setting is a love letter to grungy 90's New York City. That said, the characters can be incredibly frustrating and the story drags during the romantic periods.

Although the premise sounds gimmicky, Rob the Mob is based on a true, incredible story, and the sense of mortal danger is palpable every time Thomas goes in to score some loot (these men were not to be trifled with).
