Ripley's Game (2002)

Tom Ripley - cool, urbane, wealthy, and murderous - lives in a villa in the Veneto with Luisa, his harpsichord-playing girlfriend. A former business associate from Berlin's underworld pays a call asking Ripley's help in killing a rival. Ripley - ever a student of human nature - initiates a game to turn a mild and innocent local picture framer into a hit man. The artisan, Jonathan Trevanny, who's dying of cancer, has a wife, young son, and little to leave them. If Ripley draws Jonathan into the game, can Ripley maintain control? John Malkovich plays Ripley, an intellectual yet scheming and amoral assassin. Ripley doesn't feel guilty or anything else after each of his immoral deeds. And somehow, he is miraculously capable of getting away with everything he does. This film doesn't have the homoeroticism of The Talented Mr. Ripley but it still shows the cold-bloodedness and inexplicable intelligence of the character Ripley.

Love the Ripley books, this film is good but ofcurse not as good as the book. Malkovich is the best Ripley if you compare to Damon and Pepper.

A very good thriller. Don't go into it expecting the same sort of thing as 'The Talented Mr Ripley' because this film has a completely different feel and mood to it. However the idea of a devil like character tempting this righteous man to commit murder is compelling and is made all the better by brilliant performances from Malcovich, Scott and Winstone. Wish they'd adapt a few more Highsmith novels now.

Turns out to be a real blast, and that's at least halfway due to John Malkovich in the title role. For fans, this is primo Malkovich, full-grade Malko, Malkovich central; the actor's unrivalled gift for expressing elegant disdain hasn't been this much on display since "Dangerous Liaisons" (or, alternatively, "Con Air").
