Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke is posted on the Texas frontier to defend settlers against depredations of marauding Apaches. Col. Yorke is under considerable stress by a serious shortage of troops of his command. Tension is added when Yorke's son (whom he hasn't seen in fifteen years), Trooper Jeff Yorke, is one of 18 recruits sent to the regiment.

The third of the John Ford/John Wayne cavalry trio (Fort Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon). I read online that Ford made this movie so that he could make The Quiet Man. This was also the first movie in which. the Duke and Maureen O'Hara starred together. This was a movie about family, particularly farthers and sons. It explores issues like honor, responsibility, and heroism. The cinematography is beautiful. The backdrop is beautiful, but it takes a back seat to the close-ups of Maureen O'Hara. She and Wayne had a chemistry that is undeniable.

John Ford and John Wayne saddle up for a classic frontier military western. The story is a little weak, but the photography, scenery and horsemanship are second to none.

A boy of 15 who stands up for his dignity - could something be more touching than that? Good old ballads but a bunch too many. Alas, the Native Americans are again in a somewhat undignified posture...

Director John Ford agreed to make this one in a deal with Republic Pictures to secure financing for his pet project, The Quiet Man. Never one to do things half-ass, Ford secured a rather large budget and a top notch supporting cast for his two stars, John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Rio Grande isn't Ford's most popular or most acclaimed film, but it's hard to deny it's prototypical old-west charm.
