The pairing of Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott is exquisite -- two actors near the end of their career portraying two cowboys near the end of their career. Stellar performances by both -- coupled with Sam Peckinpah's direction -- make this a classic. The last line of the movie, Scott saying "See you later," to a dying McCrea, is about as poignant as I've ever seen.

This is a fitting swan song for Randolph Scott and a great early directorial effort for Sam Peckinpah. In a genre that can sometimes seem repetitive, Peckinpah has delivered almost a tribute to the stars of the past with his handling of the two lead characters and both their strengths and weaknesses. Many conflicts abound as they try to carry out their task of transporting some gold as well as protecting a young and confused runaway bride. This is one of the best westerns that I have seen, it is right up there with "The Outlaw Josey Wales" and "The Searchers".

Freakin' awesome... One of Peckinpah's finest works, though perhaps one of his most under-rated (or overshadowed). A harrowing tale of the test of true friendship, and of the struggle for truth in oneself. A little slow moving to begin with, but that is just because the stage is being laid out. I'm thinking this may have been Randolph Scott's final film, and it shows in how he plays out the final moments of the film. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to see a well-woven story. Everything ties in to something else, somehow.

Highly remarkable! My favourite Peckinpah. 3rd & 4th crushes, Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott!

Some of the hallmarks of Peckinpah's style—most notably the moving POV shots, quick cuts, and off-center close-ups—manifest even in the colorful, smooth High Country.
