Melville was a well known cinephile and this film is the product of years of viewing and being fascinated by crime films. Its like Melville was a sponge that absorbed every frame of film that he saw then squeezed every last drop out into this film. His later films are probably more celebrated, but became a little too minimalist for my taste. Le Doulos remains his finest hour, it is the very essence of crime cinema. Remarkable!

Unglaublich, mit welcher PrÃ¤zision Melville Bildkader und Lichtsetzung bestimmt, um gewissermaÃ?en im Bildraum zu erzÃ¤hlen. Der Lyriker Albert Ostermaier bringt die spezifische Spannung, unter der Melvilles Filme stehen, in seinem dem franzÃ¶sischen Kino gewidmeten Gedichtband "Polar" auf die Formel vom "fliessen unter dem eis", und diese vier Worte bringen das Ã¤uÃ?erst dynamische VerhÃ¤ltnis von Ã¤uÃ?erster innerer Anspannung und Ã¤uÃ?erer UngerÃ¼hrtheit, von EiseskÃ¤lte und wÃ¤rmster Melancholie, von Zynismus und Tragik idealiter auf den Punkt. GrÃ¶Ã?er kann Kino kaum sein.

It does have that unmistakable Melville-touch to it. But frankly, I have already forgotten what the hell this movie was about. I only remember that Belmondo was cool. And that he died very dramatically at the end (oops spoiler...).

After knowing director Jean-Pierre Melville's reputation as a master of crime films, I've been mostly disappointed upon actually seeing them. This one is no different - as cool and stylish as it is, it lacks an overall energy, maybe because it places cool style over the urgency of the story. That said, this is one of Melville's better films, with strong characters and a clever story, even if it does get off to a slow start and the languid pacing is trying at times. Not the classic it's been made out to be, but a solid crime drama fans of the genre will appreciate.

this might be my favorite film. i am a huge fan of the french new wave and of film noir in general and melville's hybrid is so pinpoint. there is an american 1940s feel to it but melville's make it quinessential french. this is definetely the best french gangster film since rififi and quite possibly one of the most underrated films of the period much less melville
