idk why most people said this is one of kurosawa's worst, for me it's not. no matter how 'bad', it still is a film by kurosawa, one of the greatest filmmakers ever lived. it told the beauty of reconciliation: to make peace with past traumas, to accept the loss of loved ones, without being too exploitative (except for the blatantly obvious shirts wore by the kids). great film.

Made when he was 81 and made quickly this is minor Kurosawa for sure, but it does have some great scenes. The march of the ants next to the praying people, the embrace of the dead trees, and the very eerie, creepy and supernatural eye in the sky recollection. This is part 2 of the trilogy that ended Akira's film career after he completed his magnum opus "Ran"- the film he dreamed about making for many years. What makes this film part of the trilogy is the realization that the old woman (my guess is she's in her late eighties) represents Akira himself, and that makes the film fun.

While not anywhere near the top of the list of my favorite Kurosawa movies, this was still interesting enough. Although definitely more of a film for the Japanese and their way of dealing with the fallout from Nagasaki, it still holds some universal truths. I was a little confused as to what you were supposed to be feeling at the end... also Richard Gere was only in this for like 10 minutes, there is no way he should have top billing.
