Some beautiful scenes, particularly the ones involving the Japanese matriarch and her relationship with her children. Richard Gere felt out of place here and this seemed like a half-hearted attempt by Kurosawa to appeal internationally, bringing in some more Hollywood-style filmmaking and an American actors, which I think drew from the potential power of the film.

Rhapsody in August is an old man's film in the best possible sense. Though it stares death straight in the face, it is primarily interested in life.

A haunting and sensitive film from acclaimed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa about the effects of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki.

A good family story of grandchildren connecting with thier Grandmother and coming to uderstand her experiences. Only downside for me was the distraction of Richard Gere in the film. His inclusion in the film seemed a bit forced but he did a decent job. The real strength of the film is the Grandmother as she really binds it together.
