The kindergarten monument and scenes are breath taking.

Not quite Kurosawa's best work. Still a great film, mind you, with some interesting cinematography and a few emotional punches. Not bad.

Some beautiful scenes, particularly the ones involving the Japanese matriarch and her relationship with her children. Richard Gere felt out of place here and this seemed like a half-hearted attempt by Kurosawa to appeal internationally, bringing in some more Hollywood-style filmmaking and an American actors, which I think drew from the potential power of the film.
