Because of this movie, I am now very interested in seeing more of Akira Kurosawa's films. This was far better than I even expected it to be. I do tend to have a fondness for Asian films & this one definitely captured me. I thought it had a slow moving yet powerful story & the elderly grandmother in the film was just perfect. I had no idea Richard Gere played a part in this movie, but it was definitely a treat seeing him in it. I thought he brought something extra to the film - a sort of peace and calm that he always seems to carry with him. I just thought this was a beautiful film with a powerful story & great acting. Very well filmed, also. I mean, even the title of the movie is captivating.

Not quite Kurosawa's best work. Still a great film, mind you, with some interesting cinematography and a few emotional punches. Not bad.

A very soft story that is told very gently and deals with a harsh issue in a very bittersweet way. It's very interesting to see the aftermath of those who endured Nagasaki especially because most only remember Hiroshima. The movie is very good and it's very well done because it doesn't get preachy trying to make anybody guilty, but it's about the last few survivors and the generational gap they have to those around them who know what happened but don't fully understand it. Richard Gere has a very small part but surprisingly pulls it off great with actually very well spoken Japanese. It's not a Kurosawa masterpiece but it's a very family friendly conversation and contrast of modern today Japan of the 90s and those from the old Japan of WWII. Great characters and very great ending.
