Respiro (2002)

Grazia is a free-spirited mother-of-three married to shy fisherman Pietro and living on the idyllic but isolated island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea. She shows signs of manic depressive behavior — one moment she's laughing wildly and swimming half-naked in the sea, while the next she's curled in a ball on her bed. Out of her earshot, the adult members of her extended family vaguely discuss sending her to a facility of some sort in Northern Italy.

Drama unfolding on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa. Some breathtaking landscape shots, but the film is strongest when depicting with Sicilian machismo and youth band violence, which feels authentic and can be quite shocking. Valeria Golino's strong performance and beauty carry much of the film. The second half slowly drifts off, losing narrative tightness and urgency in favour of a more symbolic, dreamlike mode. Thematic indebtedness to Roberto Rossellini's "Stromboli", starring Ingrid Bergman, is apparent in the clash of personal sensitivities and societal norms.

More a collection of gestures than a fully developed movie, Respiro offers scenery, sun and a volcanic performance from Golino, who bursts with primal energies.
