American Gigolo (1980)

Julian makes a lucrative living as an escort to older women in the Los Angeles area. He begins a relationship with Michelle, a local politician's wife, without expecting any pay. One of his clients is murdered and Detective Sunday begins pumping him for details on his different clients, something he is reluctant to do considering the nature of his work. Julian begins to suspect he's being framed. Meanwhile Michelle begins to fall in love with him.

Fascinating and underrated companion piece to Taxi Driver (if Taxi Driver is inspired by punk, American Gigolo is new wave). One of the more interesting cinematic analyses of gender.

If you're looking for a movie with great character development, this is one of them. Although slow at times and not surprising - it is a great movie. Sexeh too!

I think that American Gigalo is an underrated movie to say the least. Most people who do admit to being a fan of it say that it's just because they like Richard Gere in anything. Not only do I think this is a whole-heartedly good movie, it's way more conscious of its time period and atmosphere than pretty much everything else that it was released against. Sure we have some great criticisms of the 80s, made a full decade later. This judges contemporary lifestyles and even narrative expectations. It doesn't hurt that American Gigalo is a beautiful movie to look at; it makes all the content so much more digestible and even backs up the argument. This shows beautiful people doing bizarre things, having a shady moral code and getting away with murder (practically).

The story of a male prostitute caught up in a murder mystery, starring Richard Gere in the role that made him a star, and Lauren Hutton. This is a plot often found in Hitchcock movies. This is also the movie that made Giorgio Moroder a star, with the great high energy/disco hit, Call Me, done by Blondie. The song plays throughout the movie, and creates the noir like mood.
