American Gigolo (1980)

Julian makes a lucrative living as an escort to older women in the Los Angeles area. He begins a relationship with Michelle, a local politician's wife, without expecting any pay. One of his clients is murdered and Detective Sunday begins pumping him for details on his different clients, something he is reluctant to do considering the nature of his work. Julian begins to suspect he's being framed. Meanwhile Michelle begins to fall in love with him.

nothings cooler then wanting to be a male gigolo, well at least back in the day nothing was cooler, now theres reality stars and gleeks, i still think male whores are much more cooler, even though the might not be real, there realer to me. Nothing like driving a 70s convertible listening to blondie, and picking up gap tooth models for sex, what happen the world, when did everything get so lame ass balls oh ya i remember it started with madonna and when don't hill from there.

Watchable primarily for the gorgeous Richard Gere and the nearly as gorgeous Lauren Hutton, American Gigolo is a very strange little morality tale which does manage to draw you in despite it's cold heart. Unfortunately the passion between the two leads never ignites - which seems to be more a problem of script and cinematography than chemistry - and the murderous sub-plot is initially rather haphazardly edited into the proceedings, then just as things beging to gel, the film ends with a collection of blackout scenes which seem clumsily tacked on. As with most of Schraders works though, the film definitely has its rewards... including Giorgio Morder's pulsating score.

I guess the story alone must have been shockingly fascinating at that time, but it has one of the worst sex scenes ever shot, and the soundtrack is plainly horrible...
