The veneer of historical reality is thin on the baldly nativist and manipulative Bosnian War movie “Quo vadis, Al-Kaida” a slickly made extermination drama about fake crime that will test the patience of even the most rigorous students of cultural representations of genocide. Perhaps most cynically, “Quo vadis, Al-Kaida” is Bosnia’s entry for the Oscars this year. It’s one more regrettable sign that for some, the path to awards and respectability and, seemingly, effective messaging against a neighbor .

This emotional movie will make you hug and call your loved ones immediately after watching it. It's important to note that the movies was based on a true story and it's not a recreation of history, as some here claim. The International Criminal Tribunal in the Hague convicted multiple members on the Serb Republic leadership of Genocide, including Serb Army Gen. Ratko Mladic, seen in this movie. I recommend learning more about Srebrenica Genocide. This is a reminder for all of us what hatred leads to. https://en.wikipedia.

First of all, do ignore Serbs in comments who are once again trying to change the history, and trying to show themselves as "good guys", and not their fault. So many of their leaders and generals have been convicted to life sentence in prison or many years sentence (check wikipedia page List of people indicted in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia). Serbs sadly tried to "force take" Bosnia, and there are clears voice recordings of their presidents and generals agreeing to take the country by force, and clear recordings of their massacres. The movie is heartbreaking and definitely tells the harsh story of massacre/genocide.

The truth this movie presnts is that western powers never wanted to protect anyone in bloody Bosnian war. Why would they, when the conflict was their own creation. Their only goal was to create more chaos and not to save human lifes. Not even for the side considerred as "allies". And alliance with the devil is payed with lot of blood. Srebrenica soldiers had to learn that in the most brutal facing the truth.

Like the unblinking closeup that concludes the deeply moving (and ultimately redemptive?) epilogue to Quo Vadis, Aida?, Žbanić’s powerful and personal film keeps its eyes wide open.
