Not exactly an epic storyline to go with the epic filmmaking job done here. The cast is nice, but nobody makes an impression like Ustinov who creates a brilliant but mad Nero who never seems to look at anyone and who's delivery of lines feels like he craves sympathy from his subjects.

I love Roman movies, but this was a bit over the top with Taylor. I had never seen Christians portrayed in this demeaning way though, but I saw this a few years ago.

Enough large-scale spectacle scenes to outweigh the inevitable religiose sludge that creeps in between them.

Definitely worth watching. But one has to keep in mind that it was made for a 1950s audience. Moviegoers today might find the plot progression a tad slow.
