Prospect (2018)

A teenage girl and her father travel to a remote alien moon, aiming to strike it rich. Prospect is the kind of science fiction movie we need to see more often, told by filmmakers who don't allow the vastness of their vision to get beaten down by the scope they're able to work within.

Caldwell and Earl...have built an alien world in a Washington State rainforest using little more than reflective motes dancing in the air, bladder-like Aurelac creatures which produce valuable gemstones ...and a host of well worn space gizmos.

While far from perfect, this movie shows you can make a compelling sci-fi movie on a low budget as long as you have a good script.

Constructing character does not appear to be Earl and Caldwell’s strong suit (what’s satisfying about Cee owes almost entirely to Thatcher, a fresh face who tricks us into assuming she’s just a callow teen, when in fact, she proves to be the film’s toughest character). On the other hand, the duo show a real aptitude for world building.

Its starts off great, then rapidly declines, it has a great theme track (as in music), that it uses over and over again, almost as much as it uses the shakey *guy running behind the actors as they run for dramatic effect* cam footage. It also has a lot of that 'awful on purpose' fringe indie music that the girl plays in to her suit multiple times throughout the film, you know that music that is so bad people pretend they like it because it makes them feel unique? Yeah be prepared to hear plenty of that. Worth a watch, its still more interesting than any of the **** movies coming out in cinemas, the sci fi setting is a bit of a gimmick though. It kind of lost me when the girl just starts throwing a solo dance party in her ship literally what would have been 20 minutes after she saw her father murdered...
