Damnation Alley (1977)

Following World War III, four survivors at a desert military installation attempt to drive across the desolate wasteland of America to Albany, where they hope more survivors are living, using a specially built vehicles to protect themselves against the freakish weather, mutated plant and animal life, and other dangers encountered along the way.

Roger Zelaney's book upon which this film was based was way better. Within a few years of this films release both Jan Michael Vincent and George Peppard were starring in forgettable Reagan-era TV series. It's hard to imagine that 20th Century Fox actually thought this film would outperform STAR WARS at the box office in the summer of '77; so they released George Lucas' film first expecting it to quickly fade away and for DAMNATION ALLEY to be the top Sci-Fi contender for the summer season. It is not as bad as some critics thought it was, but its no diamond in the rough either.

An enjoyable bit of pulp. The mediocre special effects actually look quite a bit better on the Blu-Ray.
