Another terrific and fascinating Sidney Lumet film (and companion piece to his earlier and equally brilliant Serpico) about police corruption in New York City and the blurred lines between good and bad, right and wrong, and legal and illegal. It's nearly three hour running time drags here and there, but Treat Williams' extraordinary performance and Lumet's ever-present ability to give his audience a warts-and-all tour of areas of New York they never get to see (most of they would never WANT to see) ultimately make this picture compulsively watchable.

Best "undercover cop wearing a wire" movie ever, and I've seen them all, Donnie Brasco included. Long but not overlong. Treat Williams' has yet to top this excellent performance. It's got the realistic politics we've come to expect from Sidney Lumet. Great companion piece to his Serpico.

too long, lacks the action, but probably the most complete police movie ever. this is something like serpico, but from another angle, questioning the system that leads to corruption, the consequences of the corruption, and the effectiveness of anti-corruption crusades, that only locks people away, not changing the system.

Fine picture from Sidney Lumet is flawed by the performance of Treat Williams, who has a tendency to overact in scenes requiring him to show a lot of emotion. The rest of the film is quite good, though I can't help but wonder at what could've been had another actor been chosen for the role of Daniel Cielo.

One of Sidney Lumet's most complex and detailed New York City dramas about the dark, dirty side of police work, boasting a splendid performance from Treat Williams in the lead.
