One of Sidney Lumet's most complex and detailed New York City dramas about the dark, dirty side of police work, boasting a splendid performance from Treat Williams in the lead.

Prince of the City (1981) ??? Emotionally powerful film about narcotics detective in N.Y.C. who puts himself, and his family, at life threatening danger when he tries to be straight in world full of police corruption. Raw, gritty, intense, unpredictable, anchored by totally authentic New York feel and a super-charged performance by Treat Williams. Overall impact is muted by the film's sheer length. Outstanding screenplay co-written by director Sidney Lumet.

Great movie, hasn't been seen by many people, now it's been released on DVD for the first time. If your into crime films like serpico, goodfellas, donnie brasco, then you will really really like this film. It's solid throuhgout its three hour running time and treat williams, in probably his best film he will ever make, is a strong lead. The supporting cast is filled with regulars that you may know and they look and act like the real thing. A must see.

Although I would have liked to have seen Brian De Palma's take on this material (as he was originally slated to direct), Lumet still stylishly accomplishes a lot with this tale of a narcotics officer agreeing to testify against his crooked co-workers after struggling with - and wanting to make up for - his own past indiscretions while dealing with degenerate junkie informants. I'm beginning to find that many of Lumet's most successful pictures have the same trajectory: an unflinching idealist attempting (sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing) to take on a corrupted arm of the government, or organization â?? THE HILL, SERPICO, NETWORK, Q&A, and perhaps even portions of DOG DAY AFTERNOON.
