Despite the scandalised yelps about child pornography, a film of disarmingly subversive innocence.

it's funny reading others' reviews of this film; i.e, i would never say Brooke Shields "liked playing jailbait roles as a kid" What?!?! I would wager a pretty good guess, that she was simply too young to determine what role would be right for her and what roles would be absolutely inappropriate. As was this - she was too young. That does not negate the fact that this "premise" is a reality of life. Sadly, and reprehensible but true. Nor does her mother's irresponsibility and even exploitation of her child negate that Malle made an incredibly rich, evocative film here. It nearly whisks you away and into that realm. Thank God she does seem to have grown up quite nicely.

It was an interesting story and kind of disturbing to watch at times...a 12 year old girl in a whorehouse. Some of those scenes with Brooke Shields actually shocked me a little, which didn't seem right.

Louis Malle's Pretty Baby is a pleasant surprise: After all the controversy and scandal surrounding its production, it turns out to be a good-hearted, good-looking, quietly elegiac movie.

a unique and important film by Louis Malle. A brief glimpse into the life of a 12 year old prostitute growing up in a brothel at the turn of the century in New Orleans...there's nudity, piano playing,Susan Sarandon, a maid, and of course superb storytelling. I believe someone reviewed this saying the film was made in poor taste, well, I don't think we watched the same movie...nothing poor at all about this film.
