Joy lives a life filled with bad choices. At a young age, she marries and has a child–with an abusive thief who quickly ends up incarcerated. Left alone, she takes up with the guy's mate, another thief, who seems to give her some happiness but who also ends up locked up. She then takes up with a series of seedy types who offer nothing but momentary pleasure–if that.

If I hadn't seen Poor Cow with my own eyes, I would never have believed that a film with so much to offer could ultimately be so downright awful.

As a portrait of a struggling mum it's spot-on.

Not even Carol White as Joy, glowing with vitality and beautifully modulating the heroine's different moods, can make of Poor Cow more than a superficial, slightly patronising incursion into the nether realms of social realism.

Runs more like a documentary with an ab-lib script about a young mothers life. Shows the other side of the swinging 60's in all it's grim reality. All the leads are super and seem very natural. Bindon was a gangster in real life so had a bit of a head start. Right up there with the best of British from that era.

Based on Nell Dunn's novel, a sequel to Up The Junction. Classic Brit movie from the 60s with the marvellous Carol White, and a young Terence Stamp. One of Ken Loach's best films.
