Pollock (2000)

In August of 1949, Life Magazine ran a banner headline that begged the question: "Jackson Pollock: Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?" The film is a look back into the life of an extraordinary man, a man who has fittingly been called "an artist dedicated to concealment, a celebrity who nobody knew." As he struggled with self-doubt, engaging in a lonely tug-of-war between needing to express himself and wanting to shut the world out, Pollock began a downward spiral.

Awesome job by Harris. Abstract Expressionist painter Jackson Pollack is alive again right in front of your eyes.

Tortured portrait of the artist may seem slow and agonizing, but you have to remember that first off, it's an independent film and second off, it's a biography about a painter, how much lavisH should it be? Harris channels the kind of intensity that you'd need for someone as self destructive as Pollock was, complimented by a strong, sprawling cast.

Mesmerizing. Although I'm an art lover, Pollock was not one of my favorites. After watching the film, I finally "get" him. Ed Harris has done an amazing job as acting and directing. I absolutely believed I was watching Pollock himself. Marcia Gay Harden is wonderful as his wife, Lee Krasner. The acting and directing throughout is superb. Pollock sober was a sweetheart; Pollock drunk was a monster. Unfortunately, the monster prevailed. The final scene, in which an extremely intoxicated Pollock drives his car faster and faster, despite the pleas and screams of his girlfriend and her friend, was compelling. Pollock is obviously released from all his pain, and in a dream-like trance crashes the car, and one understands that he has perished. That scene is distressingly attractive, making his death seem like Nirvana instead of the sordid reality. (His girlfriend survives, although her friend is killed, but the film shows us nothing after the car crashes.) This may be one of the best films I have ever seen.
