Jia's movie looks at the changes sweeping China over the last 30-odd years through the ups and downs of a state-run theatre troupe. It's not an easy film to watch despite the straightforward premise; as usual Jia drags out the pacing, and packs in sharp observation while withholding judgement -- that is his (nuanced) strength. But there is something even more meandering here than usual, especially towards the end, as though Jia were still finding his feet transitioning from single-character portraits like Xiao Wu to multi-strand narratives. And Jia stalwart, actor Wang Hong-wei, was just much more mesmerising to watch as the defiant drifter of a pickpocket Xiao Wu.

A film that flows like freeverse poetry, meandering and unhurried. I would almost compare the experiencing of this film to the sensation one gets from listening to ambient music -- it drifts in and out of your awareness, yet you feel utterly immersed in its resonance throughout. After all, the characters are just props, and their personal stories are merely incidental. The actual focus is on the paradigm shift that an entire society faces, for better or for worse.

'The Wait Seems Never-Ending,' is how the title song from Platform goes, and the 155-minute film surely tries one's patience, but the end (which does finally come) is almost worth that wait.

Platform most definitely tests your patience, but studying the imagery, it became clear that I was in the hands of a skilled auteur. The challenge for first-time viewers might be figuring out who is who, but once you initally get past this, Jia Zhangke has created an important document of a people (and country) in transition. It's the kind of film that gets better the more you discuss and piece it all together. After falling in love with Jia Zhangke's The World, Platform may be a film that I need to see again.

A small masterpiece of exquisitely subtle filmmaking.
