'The Wait Seems Never-Ending,' is how the title song from Platform goes, and the 155-minute film surely tries one's patience, but the end (which does finally come) is almost worth that wait.

Ask just about any critic about the best filmmaker this past decade and you will likely hear the name Jia Zhangke. Considered to be the 6th generation of Chinese filmmakers, Zhangke has crafted a cinematic language all his own. Platform plays out over a time of change in China - beginning with a very pro-communist environment to a more pop culture land that cheaply imitates the US. Make sure to catch the uncut 3+ hour version if possible!

Great bit of story telling from Zhang Ke Jia. It is a depiction of China in a moment of transition moving from Mao to the free market beliefs of his successors. Through the eyes of a theatre troupe, it is compelling film making.

"Ma, you should liberate your thoughts!" "You should try self-criticism!" "People can work in those pants?" "I'm an art-worker--no manual work." "You sound more like a capitalist roader." I don't think there's a greater living film-maker, with a greater contemporary subject-matter, than Jia Zhang Ke. And this is a more poignant and even epic coming-of-age film than the best such Hollywood movies.
