Really stylish production and costume design.

Planet of the Vampires is great fun. Weird coustumes, and wild speculation at our future space ships. Two crews go down on a mysterious planet. They soon are being picked off one at a time by some un seen foe.... Then the missing return... The dead burried, and return agin in search of more blood and bodys to travel in. Even previous species are found dead and devoured on the planet. No this is not planet of the humen species but of the vampires. If you like vampire moves, or movies about outer space you might find yourself renting this movie someday in the future.

At first, I was extremely disappointed by the fact that this movie doesn't have any vampires in it, but then I realized that that was the American title, the Italian title says Terror in Space or something, which makes more sense. Other than that, I loved the story in this movie, it's fantastic. Of course, this is a low budget sci-fi movie from the 60s, but it's pretty cool and worth watching.

I'm quite fond of this films blend of stylish, European visuals with a fairly retro sci-fi story (at least in Ib Melchior's English script ... can't say if Bava's Italian script has the same feel to it). It's not among Bava's very best, but I really enjoy it.

The photography was amazing, and the costuming is gorgeous. The set design is okay. The acting is horrifically awful. The story is trite, but the concept isn't too bad. Luckily enough for me, there wasn't a single vampire anywhere in this story--begging the question of the title. They were technically more like ghosts or zombies than anything else.
