Planet Hulk (2010)

When the Hulk's presence on Earth becomes too great a risk, the Illuminati trick him to board a shuttle destined for a planet where he will be able to live in peace, and launch it into space. The Hulk's struggle to escape causes the shuttle to malfunction and crash land on the planet Sakaar, however, where he is sold into slavery and trained as a gladiator.

Finally Marvel makes an animated film worth watching with a great story (from the comic books) that has an interesting angle. The animation is not amazing, but it isn't awful as well. A lot of some of the new direct to video Marvel animation is awful and has an awful storyline. In this instance Marvel has the right formula and the result is an enjoyable animated production that doesn't treat us comic book fans as Saturday morning sugar cereal eating children, but as thinking adults. The comics never did this and Japanimation doesn't do this. So it's nice to see that maybe Marvel is getting the picture. DC got it long time ago.

Lionsgate films has done a fantastic job with its Marvel comics direct to dvd films. Planet Hulk adapts portions of the year long epic that ran in the Hulk comics a few years ago and does it well. These direct to dvd flicks never have Disney level animation but the animation is crisp and stylized. You do not need to know much going into the film at all. A still dumb Hulk is sent to a distant planet where he won't do harm to humanity but he must evolve and adapt to survive on a planet that is riddled with threats that can take even the Hulk down. It is this evolution of character that really drives this film mixing super heroes with Gladiator style story telling. Don't worry though, there is plenty HULK SMASH!
