Places in the Heart (1984)

In 1935 rural Texas, recently widowed Edna Spaulding struggles to survive with two small children, a farm to run, and very little money in the bank - not to mention a deadly tornado and the unwelcome presence of the Ku Klux Klan. Edna is aided by her beautician sister, Margaret; a blind boarder, Mr. Will; and a would-be thief, Moze, who decides to teach Edna how to plant and harvest cotton.

Sally Fields. Oscar. This is one of those times the Acadamy got it RIGHT! Her performances since, have not diminished that recognition.

This was a really great movie. We watched it with my 7th graders to go along with Roll of Thunder. This is the movie that was filmed in Waxahachie, TX, which is about 7 minutes from my house. They kept showing the court house witch freaked me out because it's so familiar to me. It was really neat, for my personally. Other than that, the plot and the acting are both awesome. Sometimes movies like this can be perceived as "clichÃ©," but this movie overcame that. I really liked it a lot. And I kind of got teary at the end.

Great performances from Sally Field, Danny Glover and John Malkovich although at times this seems too much like a Hallmark movie on TV.
