PARTY7 (2000)

Seven characters, introduced at the start of the film, get thrown together into the same hotel room: a thief who's stolen a suitcase of money from the mob, his ex-girlfriend, her obsessive boyfriend, the mob soldier sent to retrieve the briefcase, another mobster sent to kill them, master voyeur Captain Banana and his new apprentice, The Mister Yellow. Tadanobu Asano, who plays a creepy steve urkel type, gets attacked by a dude called Captain Banana. that's the only good.

A funny and excellently constructed chamber piece, Party 7 introduces 7 characters early in the film (via an extended anime credit sequence not unlike that of a TV show) and spends the rest of its runtime cutting back and forth between 4 arguing in a hotel room, 2 peeping on them from a secret annex, and 1 driving on his way to kill them all. It remains a comedy to the core though, and a strange one at that, run on bizarre dialogue and dysfunctional characters who keep it interesting. It's as if Ishii decided to take his Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl, narrow the scope, condense it to one location, and treat it as a comedy.

Proves once again why Katsuhito Ishii is one of Japan's most celebrated director. Pity the film is so eccentric it doesn't impress much!
