Metallica aside - Berlinger also directed Some Kind of Monster - Purgatory is beautifully framed, critical but not judgmental of the law enforcement official... and even-handed with the jailed men who are somehow not bitter or beaten by their ordeal.

Our Saturday film, this is a powerful final to the trilogy of documentaries that I believed help eventually free the West Memphis Three. If we lived in a country where there really is a sound justice system, these men should have never been convicted. At the very least, Arkansas should have exonerated them. The filmmakers of this series do an amazing job sticking close to the major and minor subjects of the case and documenting the many directions they take.

This three film documentary is one of the most affecting I have ever seen. The full human condition is on display here - grief, horror, vengeance, prejudice, love, hope swirl around and around. Very hard to watch in places, an extremely emotional journey where if you hate injustice you will be brimming with anger. That effectively a 'witch hunt' could be part of modern America as recently as the mid nineties is truly terrifying.

A captivating slice of America, and riveting view into a case where out judicial system did not serve the good.

This movie may be a conclusion to the saga of the West Memphis 3 (now out of jail), but it also works as a stand-alone movie, recapping the situation. The entire story is interesting, but never produces a clear damning of anyone (except perhaps the legal system in Arkansas). There was just not enough evidence at the scene to actually implicate anyone. Fascinating to read between the lines and see the changes that this story has wrought on the three young men as they spend 17 years in prison.
