Operation Valkyrie (2004)

In 1944, a group of high command officers plot an attempt against Hitler, and one of the leaders of the conspiracy, Stauffenberg, goes to a meeting with the Fuhrer in charge of exploding the place. However, Hitler survives and the officers are executed. This unsuccessful operation was called "Valkyrie Operation", and this realistic movie discloses this true event.

This foreign film was sooooo much better than the Tom Cruise version.

The first two thirds of the film are messy and the acting is flat. After Stauffenberg's plan fails it becomes somewhat interesting, watching him wither away in a mad act of denial. But what is disappointing is that the film attempts to humanise and make a hero out of Stauffenberg. He would have certainly done the world a great justice had his assassination of Hitler been successful, however, he was also a racist psychopath -he would have had to have been considering he was a well ranked colonel in the Nazi Army who had direct contact with Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler if he so desired. For Stauffenberg to be portrayed correctly would have made for a better film also; if we could have seen his transition from hating Nazi, to peace wanting Nazi. We shouldn't see Nazi Germany as a cancer in history, because that separates the fact that humans were behind it and not monsters, but we should certainly not celebrate a Nazi colonel just because he becomes a traitor.

L'histoire est bien filmée. Manque la profondeur et les motivations les plus intimes des personnages. Je n'ai pas été particulièrement frappé par l'interprétation des acteurs. Peut ne pas être vu!

I seem to be on a bit of a war film rampage lately, this and Downfall being the 2 German films I've watched as of late. Downfall was far better than this film though. This film lacked substance...most especially character substance. I kept expecting something more exciting to happen and when the film did reach it's climax, I wasn't that impressed. It didn't build up enough suspense in the crucial moments. Best way to describe it was like a reenactment of what happened..like those Crime Stopper reenactments lol...ok maybe not that bad, but it definitely lacked depth and emotion. It's good if you're just watching it for some accurate history telling...but as an entertaining film boooo

This German production precedes the Tom Cruise version and is more intriguing, but not as well produced. It's a good story, well told. Fine pacing and the acting is competent.
