I drank three or four beers while watching this and didn't even have a buzz by the end, it was that sobering. No one dies or anything. It's not like that. It's just that director Nanette Burstein, as she would eventually do with The Kid Stays in the Picture and most recently American Teen, paints such a stark picture of her subject matter. In this case, that means the three down-on-their-luck boxers who are busting their butts at the New-Bed-Stuy Boxing gym in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. As fascinating as those three were, the trainer Harry Keitt has perhaps the most gut-wrenching backstory and the most inspiring present-day story. Man, the stuff that guy's been through. If you think you have it rough and need a little perspective, check this out. Or watch it if you just want to see what great documentary filmmaking is about. Nanette Burstein is among the best in the biz.

The material is powerful--one boxer has been accused of a crime and the trial conflicts with a crucial competition--but much of it feels predigested, the themes inadvertently one-dimensional.

Directed by Nanette Burstein, Brett Morgen Starring (as themselves) Harry Keitt, George Walton, Tyrene Manson, Noel Santiago A documentary about three fledgling Bed-Stuy boxers and their rise and pitfalls. It starts with the personalities projecting themselves on camera with assurance but when the reality of their problems sets in midway into the film, the tears that roll down were very much real. The agony of defeat, the struggle of existence in a tough neighborhood, the search for an identity tower over their lives. Best Scene: The court verdict.

This documentary really touched and inspired me. All of the people depicted were really determined despite the hard lives that they led. Makes you feel like a dumbfuck for quitting so easily.

Despite gritty settings and occasionally harsh language, it's a warm, uplifting film that deserves a wide audience.
