In 1964, atomic war wipes out humanity in the northern hemisphere; one American submarine finds temporary safe haven in Australia, where life-as-usual covers growing despair. In denial about the loss of his wife and children in the holocaust, American Captain Towers meets careworn but gorgeous Moira Davidson, who begins to fall for him. The sub returns after reconnaissance a month (or less) before the end; will Towers and Moira find comfort with each other?

I understand that the movie is liked more by those that have not read the novel. That includes me then. A powerful film for 1959.

amazing postapocalyptic movie, bascially a group of people survive the first nuclear war, only to wander aimlessly until they die. it has all of the best actors of the era in it and should be watched.

Very deppressing, even today. Solid acting, solid premise. Actually ariginal for its time - considering fallout time, radioactivity bore by windpatterns, reactions to rumour and "which sources to rely on" for information that can save you live or help you prevent more death.

A profound, deeply troubling film. This one pulled the rug out on a few of my political beliefs, and introduced me to "Waltzing Matilda," one of my all-time favorite songs.

Most certainly my fav Kramer film, this almost forgotten cautionary tale of the last days of suicidal humanity has its drawbacks ... but that might sum up humanity, no? Overall, the spirit to find the best of us while fully submerged in the worst drives this tale that looks at the ragtag few remaining survivors facing certain extinction at the end of the world. Peck et al lend undeserved honor to the race and Fred Astaire proves he didn't only need to be dancing to be worth attention. Ernest Gold's score, variations on "Waltzin' Matilda", will leave you soaked in an bittersweet Australian stew for days to come. Have plenty of Coopers Pale Ale on hand.
