On the Beach (1959)

In 1964, atomic war wipes out humanity in the northern hemisphere; one American submarine finds temporary safe haven in Australia, where life-as-usual covers growing despair. The sub returns after reconnaissance a month (or less) before the end; will Towers and Moira find comfort with each other?

I'm a sucker for apocalyptic, end-of-the-world doomsday films, and this one doesn't disappoint. After a nuclear war, the remaining population of the world reside in Australia, until they find out that they only have a few weeks until the radioactive clouds find their way on shore, wiping out mankind for good. The ending is a real chiller. Recommened for those that like movies with no hope whatsoever.

Great cast, based on a great novel. Survivors of a nuclear holocaust await the impending radiation cloud at the last bastion of humanity - Australia. If you're expecting a happy ending or for Fred Astaire to sing and dance, look elsewhere. This is as real as it gets without actually surviving a nuclear holocaust. Not to be missed!!

A scary film-warning shot during the Cold War when the possiblity of WW3 was immense, Ironically this possibility is still relevant today. Those scnese with empty streets give you goosebumps, they are felt so real and eerie.

Absolutely depressing but when you think about nuclear war...it's absolutely depressing. Great film!

The message here is "There is still Time." One of those movies that makes you think a little bit and put things in perspective. Also, was filmed and set mostly in Melbourne, lots of shots from a truly great city. The threat of nuclear war seems less, but now we have climate change and drowning in our own other various poisonous substances in our food, water, air, and soil...fun stuff to think about aye! Definitely not an upper movie, and don't watch if you don't like marinating in that foreboding sense of inevitable doom for 2 hours, but that said its probably one of those movies everyone should have to watch in school, and I've read just recently that France and the UK are going to re-start nuclear testing, yay!
