In 1964, atomic war wipes out humanity in the northern hemisphere; one American submarine finds temporary safe haven in Australia, where life-as-usual covers growing despair. In denial about the loss of his wife and children in the holocaust, American Captain Towers meets careworn but gorgeous Moira Davidson, who begins to fall for him. The sub returns after reconnaissance a month (or less) before the end; will Towers and Moira find comfort with each other?

A bleak and contemplative look at how the last survivors of a nuclear holocaust live out their final months on earth, knowing that the fatal radiation sickness is coming their way. Ahead of its time.

Very deppressing, even today. Solid acting, solid premise. Actually ariginal for its time - considering fallout time, radioactivity bore by windpatterns, reactions to rumour and "which sources to rely on" for information that can save you live or help you prevent more death.

Probably the best post-apocalypse movie around. Peck, Gardner, Perkins and Astaire all bring powerful performances. Beautiful, haunting cinematography, too-- if you liked the empty city streets of 28 Days Later, see where it all began. And the last shot is simply bone-chilling.
