Such a forced tearjerker, yet felt so right, epic drama encompassing such long history through one family and one man's life, felt so related between father and son's promise, can not lie, cried my hearts out, second movie that made me so emotional after Taegukgi

You can try not to cry. But it won't work. Gukje Shijang is a wonderfully written movie that can and will make viewers cry on more than occasion. I'd watch this alone or with the understanding types if you're the type that feels the movies you watch. Capturing a lifetime of Korean history through the eyes of a man who wants nothing more than to be reunited with his father, and stand by his family.

South Korea's answer to Forrest Gump- less flashy, but more humanist, anti-war and even more sentimental (not surprising as it's from Korea), spanning six decades of turbulent history. Excellent production values and performances, and one of the those rare films which are both critical darlings and commercially successful.

For people that say this movie is 'milking the emotional feelings' and all that nonsense, are you kidding me? This movie tries to actually downplay on the emotions by including the hilarious best friend. The actors weren't the best, and the plot might have been overdone, and to be honest, I didn't expect much from this movie. This movie blew me out of the waters. People, it's sad because it's a sad story. What's even sadder is that it's a true story, on true events. Maybe not true down the the last detail, but for my grandpa who escaped while leaving behind his 6 younger siblings, or my grandmother who ran away to south korea all on her own, this is a very true story, and I believe that this movie did a really good job adding all spectrum of the emotions in a wonderfully told story. Great job director. top marks in my book.
