No Highway in the Sky (1951)

James Stewart plays aeronautical engineer Theodore Honey, the quintessential absent-minded professor: eccentric, forgetful, but brilliant. His studies show that the aircraft being manufactured by his employer has a subtle but deadly design flaw that manifests itself only after the aircraft has flown a certain number of hours. En route to a crash site to prove his theory, Honey discovers that he is aboard a plane rapidly approaching his predicted deadline.

Entertaining but insubstantial yarn about a quirky engineer who is certain an airplane tail section will fail in time. Without Stewart this probably wouldn't be worth watching, although the British cast is also solid.

James Stewart stars as an aeronautical engineer who realizes the plane he's on has a structural defect, but nobody believes him. Stewart and Marlene Dietrich are great, but Glynis Johns steals the show as a kind stewardess who befriends Stewart's character. Much more suspenseful than I was expecting.

This film goes to show how powerful a great actor can be, this film had a real good concept but a far to conjested script, but Jimmy Stewart just held it together with his memorable performance in a forgettable film. The film has a heavy amount of dialogue and very little action (even at the times where it is much needed) that is why... no doubt it was a commercial failure. Worth a watch if your interested in Engineering, but if not this was a little bland and for lack of a better word...rather boring....

Classic 1950s precursor to films like Airport and the whole genre of disaster films - reworks the myth of Icarus and Daedalus one of whom (can't remember which) flies too close to the sun and his wings fall off because the heat melts the wax - with the advent of long distance passenger flight after the war the dangers of planes falling out of the sky was a real fear. Unfortunately the first viable commercial jet liner the comet did just that and the cause was metal fatigue the exact problem in this prophetic film. A sterling Anglo American cast really lifts this otherwise fairly predictable film to one really worth watching

Fine work from the leads, but the story sags and goes for the predictable happy ending. There's a better father/daughter story in here that is sadly sidelined.
