No Highway in the Sky (1951)

James Stewart plays aeronautical engineer Theodore Honey, the quintessential absent-minded professor: eccentric, forgetful, but brilliant. His studies show that the aircraft being manufactured by his employer has a subtle but deadly design flaw that manifests itself only after the aircraft has flown a certain number of hours. En route to a crash site to prove his theory, Honey discovers that he is aboard a plane rapidly approaching his predicted deadline.

James Stewart plays a areonautical engineer who is a widower with a young daughter who spends long hours trying to proove a new model of plane will fail if they do not correct issues with its tail. Reclutant to do so and unable to nail his calculations just right he is concerned their will be a catastrophe before eh can convince anyone. Stewart plays his role as the anguised engineer very well but the rest of the movie lulls quite a bit. Still and all if a Stewart fan you will enjoy his performance here.

This film goes to show how powerful a great actor can be, this film had a real good concept but a far to conjested script, but Jimmy Stewart just held it together with his memorable performance in a forgettable film. The film has a heavy amount of dialogue and very little action (even at the times where it is much needed) that is why... no doubt it was a commercial failure. Worth a watch if your interested in Engineering, but if not this was a little bland and for lack of a better word...rather boring....

Diverting enough for a movie full of men talking about planes. Jimmy Stewart is awkward and guffawing before going all "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" on the doubting establishment; I was waiting for a line like, "Your planes are gonna crash, you dithering limeys!", but to no avail. I'm not sure he's necessarily made for roles like this, but he sure liked to play them. I've no real idea what Marlene Dietrich is doing in this film, although with this plot she could only be a movie star playing a movie star and hope for the best. She and Stewart spark nicely, but the script is never sure what they're supposed to mean to each other, exactly. And then, of course, there's the subplot with Stewart's daughter, with its horrid 1950s gender-reinforcement implications: she doesn't need knowledge, she needs DRESSES! And that poster is great. Get ready for AIR CRASHES... there are no air crashes in this movie. This wasn't bad, but it's a slight amusement at best, really...

(Some mild spoilers.) The first half of this movie is absolutely fascinating, and seems to be set up as a Hitchcockian closed-room suspense... then that suspenseful moment ends and we're in the middle of a very different movie that's far less interesting than it was at first. Not to mention it ends on possible the least ending-like note ever. However, Jimmy Stewart is worth watching all the way through. He's completely charming as a geeky, socially awkward scientist. It's not a bad movie, it's just not what it could have been.
