No Bears would be thoroughly engaging simply as a wryly funny fish-out-of-water story, with some diverting film-within-a-film metatext thrown in for thoughtful measure. But as Panahi’s stories mirror and merge, his deeper observations come into sobering and ultimately deeply moving focus.

While No Bears is profoundly powerful in its own right, the knowledge that its maker is incarcerated gives its explorations of exile, truth, and freedom a throat-catching urgency.

(Mauro Lanari) A film shamefully crumpled in on itself, onanistic metacinema about the vicissitudes of being directors in Iran. 1) A political criticism of Islamic theocracies makes no sense if one is aware that the root of the problem is theological. The absolute refractoriness to progressivist developments is not due to the lack of encounter with Enlightenment, but to the idea that the Koran would be a copy of the original written by Allah and dictated to Muhammad by the archangel Gabriel, and without human mediation as in the other two Abrahamic religions there is no exegetic, hermeneutic, interpretative possibility. 2) The cordon sanitaire of national and international colleagues has rushed to Panhani's aid as when the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to an important personality in danger of life. But here Panhani thinks only of his own existence and becomes the spokesman for the oppressed others only in conclusion, mentioning for a few seconds of torture, imprisonment, attempted suicides and murders suffered by his compatriots. Too little, I repeat: shamefully.

While 3 Faces explores the social position of women in Iran through oft-whimsical encounters as Panahi drives across northwestern Iran with actress Behnaz Jafari (also playing herself), No Bears feels much more darkly prophetic, seemingly aware of the filmmaker’s encroaching imprisonment.

You leave feeling like you’ve just seen a truly extraordinary late work produced by one of the era’s greatest working auteurs, quickly followed by the sense of experiencing a sucker punch when you remember that the man driving away from the scene of the crime onscreen isn’t able to go anywhere once that screen fades to black.
